Village green plan to preserve Pincents Hill
Campaigners in Calcot have applied to turn Pincents Hill into a village green to thwart developers.
The Save Calcot Action Group (SCAG) has made the application to West Berkshire Council and the public can comment on the idea until Thursday, August 20.
The campaigners have made the move in a bid to prevent Blue Living carrying out its plan to build 750 to 1,000 houses on a former golf course behind Sainsbury’s in Calcot. Blue Living has held a series of public meetings to show off its plans and is expected to put in an application this month.
The site has also been identified as a potential development area in the West Berkshire Local Development Framework which is also out to consultation now.
Campaigners have acted with the support of West Berkshire councillor for Birch Copse, Joe Mooney, Jean Gardner, who chairs Tilehurst parish council, and Alok Sharma, the Reading West prospective Parliamentry Conservative candidate.
The SCAG website says: “This is very much a last-ditch attempt to prevent any development on the hill and the process is fraught with many pitfalls and obstacles, but it could work and we feel it is better to try and fail than not to try at all.
“If this application gets as far as an appeal then we will appeal to the public for letters confirm-ing that people have used this hill for leisure purposes for a period of over 20 years. We may not even get to that stage but we can but hope.”
Birch Copse councillor Tony Linden said: “If Pincents Hill were to gain village green status, then no-one would be able to build on it.”
He said the three Birch Copse councillors had supported the application and objected to West Berkshire Council’s local development framework proposals suggesting Pincents Hill as one of the options for new homes.
SCAG has been battling against the development – with the support of local politicians of all parties including Reading West MP Martin Salter – since the first public meeting in September 2008 when the proposals to develop 37-acre former Pincents Manor Golf Course were announced by Blue Living, which owns the land and has an option on 11 neighbouring acres.

West Berks LDF: Letter Against Development
West Berkshire Council has suggested that Pincents Hill and part of the North Wessex Downs (the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) adjoining, is one of the sites that could be used for development. Please don’t let this happen. Underneath this statement is a letter that could be used to protest against this suggestion. If you could add your own words in the box this gives the pre-formatted letter more value, or please write you own. We need your help to stop this becoming one big building site. These letters need to be received by West Berkshire District Council no later than 3rd July 2009.
Please help us ….. Thank you.
